As part of the NZGTTM transition, Christchurch City Council has provided helpful clarification on how risk assessments should be scoped within TMPs submitted to CCC from next month.
Following a strong launch of the TTM Transition & Credentials Roadshow in late April, the Temporary Traffic Management Industry Steering Group (TTM-ISG), with support from NZTA, has now delivered workshops across Whangārei, Auckland, Waikato / Bay of Plenty, New Plymouth and Hawke’s Bay, with more than 300 attendees participating to date.

In July 2024, the TTM ISG officially became an incorporated society, providing security around our long-term future and allowing us to focus on connecting and representing the TTM industry, while continuing to help the sector navigate the change we are facing.
NZTA's Vanessa Browne outlines the agency's progress toward safer, more efficient temporary traffic management across the state highway network. With contractors already on board, NZTA is focused on fit-for-purpose setups, prompt removal of equipment, and minimising disruption for road users. July 2024 marked the end of the NZGTTM pilots, with the risk-based approach now becoming standard on state highways.

Road cones are a symptom, not the problem.
Last year, in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, NZTA had to repair pavements on state highways in Gisborne while dealing with the onset of winter. To manage these unfavourable conditions NZTA changed its typical ways of working, using an uncommon solution to rehabilitate the road and a light-touch solution for traffic management.

Consultation on the proposed TTM Credentials Framework closed 5 April 2024. The Framework sets the foundation for a new training approach to better manage safety and competency across the industry.
The Manawatu-Whanganui NOC pilot, led by Higgins and Beca, has been testing a structured four-step risk-based approach to maintenance activities since October 2023, with early results highlighting the importance of collaboration and change management.
Fulton Hogan's Northland NOC pilot is testing the NZGTTM risk-based approach across reactive and planned cyclic maintenance works, with crews empowered to make real-time safety decisions on the ground.
Downer is using the North Canterbury NOC pilot to test and refine its approach to the NZGTTM risk-based methodology across training, assurance, good practice, commercial, and communications workstreams in a real-world environment.
Getting started with the risk-based approach doesn't have to mean going from 0 to 100 overnight. Here are some practical examples from the Northland Transportation Alliance showing how small steps can make a real difference.
Downer's interactive risk assessment tool is now freely available to the whole industry in two formats, helping TTM workers make better decisions across the varied and changing environments they work in every day.
TTM-ISG responded to the Draft Government Policy Statement (GPS) on Land Transport, welcoming the focus on value for money while calling for safety to remain central and TTM to be integrated earlier in work planning.
