Practical examples of risk-based TTM in action

The NZGTTM Case Studies Library showcases real examples from across the sector where councils, contractors, and NZTA delivery teams have applied the principles of the New Zealand Guide to Temporary Traffic Management (NZGTTM) to deliver safer, smarter, and more efficient work.

These stories highlight how risk-based thinking is being embedded on the ground, from planning and procurement through to live-site decision making.

This series has been developed in partnership with Waka Kotahi to help RCAs, suppliers, consultants and project teams understand what good looks like, and how NZGTTM principles are being practically applied in different environments. The case studies include routine maintenance, mobile operations, capital works, and local council innovation, demonstrating how teams are reducing exposure, improving efficiency, and strengthening coordination.

Each case study highlights:

  • Why a new approach was needed
  • What the team changed or trialled
  • How risks were assessed and managed
  • The NZGTTM principles applied
  • The outcomes achieved (safety, efficiency, cost, community impact)

These examples provide practical insight for organisations preparing their own transition plans, updating processes, or trialing new ways of working.

Below you’ll find the first set of published case studies, with more to come as NZGTTM adoption progresses across the country.
