Road Works Safety - Cross Sector Working Group

We’re pleased to introduce the Road Works Safety - Cross Sector Working Group, a collaborative group established in response to the findings of the 2025 Traffic Controller Safety Survey, which highlighted persistent risks, abuse, and unsafe driver behaviour faced by roadworkers across New Zealand and Australia.

About the Group

The Working Group brings together representatives from NZ Transport Agency – Waka Kotahi, New Zealand Police, Auckland Transport, WorkSafe New Zealand, ACC, Civil Contractors New Zealand, Transporting New Zealand, and AA, alongside industry and road user voices.  The CSWG supports cross-sector collaboration by bringing together data, insight, and lived experience to inform future initiatives across enforcement, education, technology, and communications.

The focus is on practical, risk-based improvements that can be applied across the road corridor with the mahi being grounded in the real world experiences of traffic controllers and people working on the frontline every day. By working collectively across agencies, regulators, industry, and road users, the group aims to help make road worksites safer, more consistent, and better understood, supporting safer journeys for everyone and helping ensure roadworkers and road users alike get home safely to their whānau.
