Police Target Speeding Through Roadworks in South Island Operation

NZ Police have launched a targeted operation focusing on speeding through roadworks, highlighting ongoing safety risks for workers and road users.

A recent NZ Police operation across more than 30 roadwork sites in the South Island has highlighted the ongoing risks posed by driver behaviour through worksites.

As part of “Operation Safe Works”, Police were out in force targeting speeding through roadworks, with multiple drivers stopped within minutes of monitoring sites. The initiative follows several concerning incidents, including a fatal crash and a road worker being struck on site.

This serves as a timely reminder of the risks faced every day by those working on our roads, and the critical role driver behaviour plays in keeping both workers and road users safe.

The initiative strongly aligns with the focus of the Road Works Safety Cross Sector Working Group, which is bringing together industry, government, and road user representatives to better understand behaviour through sites and identify opportunities to improve outcomes - through education, technology, and enforcement.

We encourage everyone to take care through roadworks and help support safer outcomes across the network.
