Chair's Report from the 2025 AGM
Kia ora and welcome to the first full Annual General Meeting report for the Temporary Traffic Management Industry Steering Group (TTM ISG).
Following our first six months as an incorporated society and the inaugural AGM in December 2024, we began 2025 with a strategic planning session alongside our newly formed leadership team and communications advisor. This session set a clear direction for both our working groups and how we support the industry organisations our members represent. The outcomes laid the foundation for an incredible year of activity, driving progress at pace across the sector.
Below are some key highlights from 2025:
Industry Collaboration & Engagement
NZ Delegation at TMAA Conference (Sydney): Strengthened ties with TMAA and engaged with TfNSW, TransUrban, and Austroads, paving the way for future collaboration.
Road Cone Hotline:
Provided a platform for balanced media engagement and welcomed Ketan Chandu (WorkSafe) to our Committee.
Conference Engagement: The TTM ISG maintained a strong presence at industry events with booths at both the TARMAC and Future Roads conferences, alongside panel and speaking slots, including the RIMS Forum.
Campaigns & Initiatives
“Use It or Remove It” Campaign: Operating across 10 regions with strong support from TTM suppliers and Auckland Transport. Over 21,000 redundant TTM items removed from roading networks. This initiative continues to extend new partnerships to ‘tidy up’ TTM across our network.
Kickstart Programme for Councils: Delivered tailored sessions to help councils adopt risk-based TTM approaches, supported by face-to-face conversations on regional approaches across .
“How to do NZGTTM” Webinar Series:
Seven webinars from March to July attracted over 2,500 attendees, thanks to the commitment of ISG members.
Training & Competency
Delivered five micro-credentials to the industry, continuing progress on the training roadmap.
Advocacy & Leadership
Met with Transport Minister Chris Bishop to present sector challenges, dispel myths, and showcase industry progress.
Welcomed new Committee members Monika Wakeman (NZTA) and Arne Corrie Johnston (Civil Contractors NZ), and farewelled Michelle Farrell and Kayt Robinson with gratitude for their contributions.
Appointed Simon McManus as our inaugural CEO in July, bringing leadership and experience to drive long-term ambitions.
Financial Performance
Strong financial position thanks to the support of our funders, enabling continued delivery of initiatives into 2026.
Research & Insights
Released the Traffic Controller Safety Survey Report in Wellington, with almost 700 respondents—the most comprehensive survey of road workers to date in New Zealand. Thank you to TMAA for the opportunity to partner together for this.
Key Findings:
- 60% experience verbal abuse weekly.
- 18% report monthly physical assaults.
- 65% encounter drivers refusing to stop weekly.
- 50% had a near miss in the past year.
- 4% were struck by a vehicle in the past 12 months.
- A cross-sector working group has been formed to implement recommendations and improve safety and driver behaviour. Founding members of this group include NZ Police, Automobile Association, Civil Contractors New Zealand, WorkSafe NZ, Accident Compensation Corporation, NZ Transport Agency, Transporting NZ and ourselves at the Temporary Traffic Management Industry Steering Group.
In Closing
I extend my sincere thanks to all past and present ISG members and their organisations for their time, effort, and commitment throughout the year. This year alone, I estimate around 2000+ hours have been given by our volunteers on the ISG committee on top of their already busy day jobs. This incredibly generous investment by them and their organisations has enabled the delivery our busy year and support to the sector. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Kayt and Simon for their dedication in amplifying our industry voice.
Looking ahead, 2026 will build on this momentum and the continued delivery of initiatives that create opportunities for generational change in the Temporary Traffic Management sector. We look forward to sharing more about some of our exciting plans in the new year.
Wishing all of our sector and their families a safe and well-deserved rest this Christmas season.
Ngā manaakitanga,
Darren Wu
